A new tattoo is an exciting piece of art that you’ll carry with you forever. Whether you’ve chosen a color tattoo, fine-line design, mini tattoo, floral artwork, realism, or Chinese gongbi style, proper aftercare is essential to keep it vibrant and beautiful. At Eva Tattoo Studio in Los Angeles, we take pride in creating delicate, detailed tattoos — and we want to help you care for them the right way.

Here’s Eva’s expert guide to tattoo aftercare, to ensure your new tattoo heals perfectly.

Why Tattoo Aftercare Matters

Good aftercare helps your skin heal smoothly, prevents infection, and preserves the clarity and vibrancy of your tattoo. For styles like color tattoos, fine-line designs, floral tattoos, and mini tattoos, aftercare is especially important — because their beauty lies in their crisp details and bright colors.

Day 1: Immediate Aftercare

Right after your tattoo session, Eva will apply a protective film or bandage to your skin.

👉 When to remove the film:Leave the bandage on for 2-4 hours (or as instructed).

👉 First wash:

  • Gently remove the film with clean hands.

  • Wash the area with lukewarm water and fragrance-free, gentle soap.

  • Pat dry with a clean paper towel — do not rub.

👉 Apply ointment:

  • Lightly apply a thin layer of recommended healing ointment (we’ll suggest suitable products at the studio).

Days 1-3: Cleaning & Moisturizing

During the first few days, your tattoo is like an open wound — gentle care is key.

✅ Morning and night routine:

  • Wash gently with lukewarm water and fragrance-free soap.

  • Pat dry with a clean towel.

  • Apply a thin layer of ointment or fragrance-free lotion.

✅ Avoid:

  • Tight clothing over the tattoo.

  • Direct contact with pets or dirty surfaces.

  • Scratching, rubbing, or picking at the tattoo.

Days 4-14: Scabbing & Peeling Phase

At this stage, your tattoo will start to peel and form light scabs — this is normal!

✅ Continue cleaning once or twice daily.

✅ Switch to a fragrance-free light moisturizer instead of ointment.

✅ Keep the tattoo hydrated — but not overly wet.

🚫 Do not pick at scabs.

🚫 Avoid soaking in baths, pools, or the ocean.

🚫 No sun exposure — UV rays can fade the fresh tattoo.

Weeks 2-4: Ongoing Healing

Your tattoo should be mostly healed after 2-3 weeks, but deeper layers of skin continue to recover.

✅ Continue using a gentle moisturizer daily.

✅ You can gradually resume normal activities — but avoid intense sun exposure.

👉 For color tattoos & fine-line designs:Protect your tattoo with a high SPF fragrance-free sunscreen once fully healed to prevent color fading.

Special Tips for Eva’s Styles

Color tattoos:

  • Vibrant color tattoos need moisture to retain brilliance.

  • Always use sunscreen on exposed areas once healed.

Fine-line & mini tattoos:

  • Thin lines can blur if the skin is damaged — avoid scratching or over-moisturizing.

Chinese gongbi & realism tattoos:

  • These highly detailed designs rely on precision — be patient and gentle throughout healing.

Floral tattoos:

  • Keep the skin supple to maintain the soft shading and fine detail of floral work.

Common Questions

Q: My tattoo is very itchy. Is this normal?

A: Yes! Itching is part of the healing process. Do not scratch. Lightly pat the area or apply a thin layer of moisturizer.

Q: The scabs look thick — should I worry?

A: Some scabbing is normal. Don’t peel it. If you notice signs of infection (severe redness, swelling, pus), contact us.

Q: My tattoo looks dull while healing — will it brighten up?

A: Yes. Freshly healing skin can look cloudy or dull. Once fully healed (around 4 weeks), the true color and sharpness will show.

Q: When should I book a touch-up?

A: After about 6 weeks, if you notice any small areas that need touch-up, contact Eva Tattoo Studio to schedule.
